Re: Purchasing Power of Surviving Spouses and Families of New York City Police and Fire Department Uniformed Public Safety Employees Killed in the Line of Duty a

Dear Mr. Larson:

By telephone, you have posed the question: how does the purchasing power of the surviving family of a New York City Police or Fire Department Uniformed Public Safety Employee killed in the line of duty compare with the purchasing power of that family before the death of the employee.

Summary Conclusion

As we discussed, because of the unique financial resources ,and needs of each family, there is no answer to this question based on averages that would be appropriate for the individual families.

However, under current law, the spouse and/or children of a Police or Fire Department Uniformed Public Safety Employee killed in the line of duty is eligible to receive a pension benefit equal to 1001 of the salary earned by the deceased employee in the 12 months preceding death.
