nvnvubt1 ur MANMAITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE THE CITY t:NIVEasrry or NEW v rnx 199 CHAMBERS STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10007

TO: The College Community

FROM: Dr. Martin Levine i V ,

DATE: October 27, 2001

SUBJECT: Environmental Health and Safety

In response to the headline in the Daily News, dated Friday, October 26, 2001 that called the WTC area a "Toxic Zone", the air was resampled at BMCC that day. Air samples were collected inside BMCC at the entrance on 2 South, on 7 South, on the Harrison Street bridge, on 6 North, on 3 North, at the N. Moore entrance and in one of the classrooms on West Street (W102).

These samples were analyzed for benzene, mercury vapor and carbon monoxide using MSA detector tubes. The benzene tube measures up to 300 ppm, the mercury vapor tube will detect levels of mercury vapor up to 0.08 ppm and the carbon monoxide tube can measure levels up to 100ppm. No detectable amounts of benzene, mercury vapor or carbon monoxide werefound in any sample.

The air in the building is of exceptionally high quality. To maintain the integrity of our air quality, it is imperative that all windows remain closed. Vice President Anderson has asked Buildings and Grounds to seal all windows with duct tape to prevent accidental air leakage into the building and this operation is in progress.

I will continue to keep you informed of any further sampling that occurs and the test results. Information from the EPA web site (epa.gov) is updated and posted weekly on the Human Resources bulletin boards.
